In Class Participation:  Class will consist of lecture, discussions, group activities (small & large), chapter quizzes and written reflections.  Students will complete in class written reflections and/or chapter quizzes each class meeting.  You are responsible for signing in upon arrival to class; failure to do so will result in no credit for that day.  Participation includes class attendance and active involvement.  You are expected to arrive on time, stay the full length of class and actively participate in all class activities and discussions.  Absences, tardiness and early departure can impact your grade.  Students are expected to attend ALL classes.  Missing 2 or more classes in a row and/or excessive absence may result in instructor dropping student from the class.

Missing class(s) means you do not earn participation points that day.

Active participation means showing respect to other students and the instructor, actively listening, participating in class discussions (large group), staying awake, and participating in small groups.  If you choose not to participate in the large group, find another way to show me you are engaging with the material in class.  One option is to record feedback and what you have learned in your folder.   The use of cell phones in class for anything other than class work is not appropriate (you will be asked to leave the room).

Reading Assignments:  Complete all assigned reading before class.  Come to class prepared to discuss the information and ask questions.  I will not be reviewing the readings in lecture, but will assume that you have read it all.  Lectures will be extensions and clarifications of the reading and topic.  You may also be asked to refer to readings in some in-class assignments. Please ask all questions in class rather than during break or after class.

Quizzes:  Short quizzes will be given in class on chapters 2 – 14; they must be submitted when collected or before leaving class as instructed.  There is no make-up of these quizzes if you are absent, arrive late or leave early.

Midterm:  Midterms will be distributed on 9/29 (2 weeks before they are do).  They are to be completed at home and brought to class on 10/13/14. No late papers accepted

Final Project:  You will be given a list of “Ideas for Projects” to select from.  Projects can expand beyond papers into other realms of communication and be presented as stories, poems, dialogues, role-plays, photo essays, videos or mixed media presentations.  Projects can be done individually or in pairs.  Group projects need my pre-approval. Students will be randomly assigned either 11/24 or 12/01 or 12/8 as their project due date. You will present to the entire class.

Final/Reflection:  Final exam/reflection questions will be given out on 12/01 (two weeks before they are due).  Final exam/reflection papers are to be done at home and brought to class on 12/15/14, between 6 and 7 pm.  No papers accepted after 7 pm.

Dropping the Class:  It is the student’s responsibility to drop this class.  Last day for student initiated drop is 9/11.  If a student drops this class after this date, a “W” will appear on their student record.
